Daytime view

With a stunning vista greeting us from every window in our flat, there is simply no way to capture it all in a photo. So I recorded a quick video of the view, which you can see here:




There's nothing I love more than curling up with a good book in a window seat, and our flat is full of cushioned perches, perfect for attempting to read. I say attempting because how can you focus on a fictional view when this is your real one?

2013 - Year of the Mouse!

As Chinese New Year approaches (February 10th this year), we bid a fond farewell to the Year of the Dragon. My oldest son was born in the Year of the Dragon, so all year long when we saw anything with a dragon on it, we'd point it out to him. And now as the Year of the Dragon roars out, we make way for the new year... the Year of the Mouse!

Did you know that today, September 10th, is World Suicide Prevention Day?
Per the International Association for Suicide Prevention: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the world, especially among young people. Nearly one million people worldwide die by suicide each year. This corresponds to one death by suicide every 40 seconds. The number of lives lost each year through suicide exceeds the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined.
My life was affected by suicide from an early age. My fourth grade teacher at a private school in California's San Fernando Valley took her life during the school year. A close classmate from the public school I attended in 5th and 6th grade took her life in 7th grade after I had moved away. A boy I knew in middle school killed himself. A close friend in the 7th and 8th grade attempted suicide, and my mom took me to visit him at the hospital a few hours from our h…

Unwelcome guest

Where oh where are all my men when I need them? The boys are at camp and Mike is at a meeting and I'm home cleaning and discovered I was not alone in our house!
High on the wall in the living room I found a big hairy spider. Normally I get one of my manly men to take care of it, but alas, I was the sole human around. This guy was BIG! And it really freaked me out! And I'm not that easily freaked out, having lived in an area with lots of scorpions that hide out from the heat in your shoes, massive amounts of tarantulas that we used to pick up and play with because they tickle the palm of your hand, and the occasional rattle snake found in the garage when trying to do laundry.
I put two extensions on the vacuum cleaner wand and sucked that sucker off the wall. When it hit the part of the hose I was holding, there was a loud THUNK, followed by a scream (mine, not the spider's).
